PROS AND CONS OF TRAIT THEORY

PRONS
1. Supports the idea that leaders are extraordinary people. It is a requirement of most people to see their leaders as gifted people, and the trait approach fulfills this need.
2. There is a long research tradition and a significant body of research data that support this approach.
3. Focuses only on the leader and analyze very thoroughly this component in the leadership process.
4. Provides benchmarks for what we need to look for if we want to be leaders.

CONS
1. All the traits are not identical with respect to the essential characteristics of a leader.
2. Some traits can be attained by training and may not be inherited.
3. The traits required to acquire leadership may not be similar to which are required to sustain      leadership
4. Fails to explain the many leadership failures in spite of the required traits.
5. It ignores the environmental factors which may fluctuate from situation to situation.

PROS AND CONS OF THREE SKILL APPROACH
PRONS
       1.    Strains the importance of developing particular leadership skills
       2.     Describes leadership in terms of skills that makes leadership available to everyone
       3.     An expansive view of leadership that integrates a wide variety of components
       4.     Consistent with the syllabuses of most leadership education programs

CONS
      1.    It becomes more general and less precise by including so many components
      2.    Cannot be considered as a good predictive theory
      3.    The theory claims not to be a trait theory however it lists major components that are trait-              like
      4.     Constructed based on a study of military personnel and has questionable application to other populations.
